CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF HARMONY

The Seven Valley Chorus truly believes "Life Begins at Forty ...40 Years of Harmony." They are currently celebrating their 40th anniversary as the local chapter of Sweet Adelines International with a performance on Saturday, November 1 at 7:00 pm at the Homer Intermediate School. The show will highlight music and memories over the past 40 years. It will also feature the acclaimed barbershop quartet, Reveille, and Fiddlestix, an energetic group of talented young musicians from the Cortland School District.

Classic barbershop tunes and contemporary songs will be featured for your entertainment by approximately 25 Sweet Adelines ranging in age from 13 to 77. Director Paulette Young has chosen songs for the chorus that will emphasize the tight harmony and a cappella vocals of the barbershop style of singing. Associate Director Mary Lou Storrier will direct and three new assistant directors will have their debut:: Lisa Belknap, Melissa Gould, and Judi Thomas. Also featured will be a double quartet and two quartets, Chapter 2 and Barbershop Dot Com.

When first chartered in October 1968 as the Cortland County Chapter of Sweet Adelines, the chorus belonged to Region 1 of Sweet Adelines, the largest singing organization for women in the world. Organized into 26 geographical regions, the chorus is now in Region 16 Lake Ontario which includes upstate New York and the southeastern province of Ontario. In 1990 their name was changed to the Seven Valley Chorus to better reflect their membership. Today their members come from Cortland, Homer, McGraw, Truxton, Virgil , Groton, Dryden, Ithaca and Newfield.

Each spring, the Region 16 holds it's annual competition in Syracuse. Last year, over 25 choruses ranging in size from 20 to 120 competed for awards. Under the direction of Paulette Young, the Seven Valley Chorus proudly took home the "Most Improved Chorus" award. This award is considered one of the most prestigious awards in Sweet Adelines as any chorus of any size can win it. This is not the first time either that the chorus has taken home this award. Back in 1980 and 1981, under the direction of Mary Lou Storrier, the chorus won the award back to back and again in 2001 and 2002, the chorus received this honor. Their hard work and dedication will be highlighted in "Life Begins at Forty... 40 Years of Harmony."

Sharing the Homer Intermediate School stage with the Seven Valley Chorus will be a talented group of young string players from the Cortland School students appropriately named "Fiddlestix." Ms. Julie Carr directs this energetic group of students who play a variety of string instruments.

Also featured on the show will be the exciting, enthusiastic, and always entertaining barbershop quartet Reveille. A versatile quartet, Reveille commands a repertoire remarkable in its variety, ranging from traditional ballads, to original comedy, to Sinatra, to contemporary swing, and featuring hot charts from a variety of top arrangers.
